Bermuda shorts are back in stores after taking a leading role during the 1990s, in fact, it has become a must-have piece  for the spring/summer 2020 season. Despite being the typical garment that generates mixed feelings due to the cut that characterizes it – since it may not enhance the figure, but it offers comfort and is cool for hot days – it seems to have managed to shade the shorts during this summer.

With a name that takes us to the paradisiacal archipelago of the triangle, the Bermuda shorts emerged as part of the military uniform of the British army in those islands where the tropical climate brought very hot temperatures. Later, it was adopted as a usual garment in the business environment and was combined with high socks, shirt, tie and moccasins.

Later on, the male style garment was perpetuated as a trend at the end of the 20th century. An icon that knew how to wear it better than anyone else? Lady Di. Diana of Wales knew how to hypnotize the world with her presence, the history she lived and a personality that was reflected in her style, marked a stage and proclaimed herself as a style icon that remains in time and especially this year. She combined the Bermuda shorts with basic T-shirts, belts or sneakers as well as in more formal occasions in which she bet on tailoring together with a blazer and shoes.

By early 2020, it was predicted that Bermuda shorts would become a key garment this summer. Among the most prominent brands that bet on this piece in their fashion shows are Valentino, Givenchy, Bottega Veneta, Dolce & Gabanna and Max Mara. Leather, prints, denim and single-colour safari have all been used in the wardrobes of the fashion insiders and on the catwalks of the most famous fashion weeks. This shows that despite the controversy that may be caused by considering it an unflattering piece, it has an obvious versatility that can solve any day when choosing outfit is made uphill.

Above all, it’s a good idea as the protagonist of a look for those who work during these dates when the sun radiates the city’s asphalt with strength. The combination of this garment ranges from a simple tank top in the same colour, a basic T-shirt and a belt to a matching jacket for the sunset. As far as footwear is concerned, there is an almost infinite range of possibilities, as it is just as possible to complement them with flat padded sandals, with heels, braided or thin straps, as well as sports shoes with a minimalist air.

What until now was known as a difficult piece, the catwalks and streetstyle have readapted it, demonstrating that it is much more than a sport garment and that it can be presented as a totally eclectic garment. Even a style icon like Diana of Wales has trusted the comfort of Bermuda shorts for both black-tie events and boat trips. Undoubtedly, a safe bet for this season.
