On May 21, the World Day of Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is celebrated. It was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2002, after the UNESCO Universal Declaration had been approved the previous year. Past experiences have taught Humanity about the fundamental importance of the union between cultures and religions for a peaceful coexistence that gives rise to dialogue to share different perspectives. However, there are still many challenges to achieve on this issue. It is important not to forget that the consequences of hatred cause wounds that are very difficult to heal.
The purpose of the declaration is to avoid discrimination based on motives such as culture or religion and to make visible the wealth and possibilities for improvement that the world contains by coexisting different identities, races and traditions. In this way, it contributes to global society learning to share and understand differences and to establish everything that unites us.
Three out of four of the world’s largest conflicts occur because of discord between cultures, ethnicities, or religions. An overwhelming fact that confirms the need for learning as a bridge between different visions and ways of life and that puts the point in empathy as the basis for understanding the difference. All in order to achieve peace, stability and development.
Cultural exchange enhances economic growth and, fundamentally, intellectual and affective growth. Tolerance and diversity are essential pillars to end poverty and achieve sustainable development. In addition, the appearance of the internet supposes an open window that presents a universal dimension that makes it possible to establish a contrast of opinions between people with different customs. Through dialogue, the individual manages to establish ties, understand and respect divergent experiences and ideas. That respect and understanding lead to the birth of multicultural communities that incorporate, in turn, new traditions, contributing diversity.
However, the road to a world that is tolerant and respectful of diversity still continues, as there are many problems in relation to cultural plurality. There are those who seem to have forgotten what past generations lived, fought and achieved, as well as the problems that hatred brings.
It is in everyone’s hands to collaborate to achieve a society open to knowledge and combat the multicultural, intercultural and transcultural problems that hinder a united global society, such as stereotypes that build beliefs, characteristics or habits that do not have to be necessarily essential, not even certain, to identify groups and that unleash prejudices that prevent coexistence between people from different cultures.
That the government of a region ignores and forgets minority communities and that, in addition, they are socially rejected, it causes inequality and social conflicts and problems that have to do with language literacy and the disappearance of certain cultures. The commitment to change these issues begins with daily gestures that combat polarization, promote inclusion and the advantages that reside in a world linked by different points of view, ideas, perspectives or experiences.
There are movements, initiatives, associations, foundations, organizations or people that, in one way or another, fight day by day to give visibility, inform and raise awareness about this reality. Therefore, it is essential to highlight on a day like today, the work they do and show some of the projects that are carried out.
On the one hand, we propose a book in which you can connect with problems that are distant due to a geographical issue, but that nevertheless have a component that affects each and every one of us. It shows how people fight day by day to improve their country, to fight damages that the legal frameworks do not contemplate.
Sometimes we forget that there are still countries where fundamental rights are not protected. The book covers contexts, experiences, people, concepts and situations that expose the conflict between the human being and the laws of certain places. Its title is “Chronicles of long distance. The rules of the world ”, written by the 5W collective. In addition, they have an Instagram account, @ revista5w, in which through images captured by photographers resident in different parts of the world they give visibility to realities and testimonies that lead us to reflection and awareness.
Another initiative to delve, this time, into aspects that affect the Latin American community is Radio Ambulante, a podcast in which chronicles are recounted that give voice to stories and claim different problems. The programs can be heard through the website itself or different platforms such as Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Google Podcasts or NPR One. They also have an Instagram account where they upload illustrations related to the stories they tell, it is called @radioambulante.
Interculturality is one of the great treasures that the world holds. Every time there are new conflicts that move the foundations of the union, society begins to reflect on the mistakes that have been made. Consequently, they start from the natural impulse to start again, dialogue and understand each other. However, when time pushes these types of events towards a horizon that is left behind and is moving away, there are those who forget such events and, therefore, the need for union and tolerance as a symbol of development for a more global society. fair and in which one coexists with a diversity of thoughts, opinions, identities and traditions. That is why this day is important, because it is necessary to remind ourselves that respect for the different will always make us stronger.
